The Best Songs of 2009
I love end of the year “best of” lists, and I really love music. So, naturally, I super love best of music lists.
When I really really like a song, I will literally listen to it on repeat for days and days. Yeah, I know that’s weird, and I appreciate your concern. Don’t worry…it worries me too because I think it might signal some weird disorder, but anywho…
Here are the songs of 2009 that, at some point, I listened to over and over and over and therefore now consider them the best songs of 2009. Check out the songs here.
In no particular order…
- Nothing to Worry About by Peter Bjorn and John
- My Girls by Animal Collective
- Lisztomania by Phoenix
- Moon and Moon by Bat for Lashes – This song is so beautiful it makes my heart ache. You may have noticed that my playlist contains Daniel as well, and that’s because I spent way too much time trying to decide which song was more awesome. I finally concluded that Moon and Moon was slightly more awesome (emphasis on slightly) but I just couldn’t leave Daniel off the playlist. If you haven’t heard that song 1) I am slightly judging you right now and 2) you need to listen to it immediately and then listen to it on repeat for 2 days straight.
- Me No by Clem Snide.
- Panic Switch by Silversun Pickups – This song makes me want to punch my fists in the air and then do the Flashdance-run-in-place-as-fast-as-you-can-dance.
- The Strangers by Saint Vincent
- Two Weeks by Grizzly Bear
- The Train Song by Feist and Gibbard – Why do I love this song so much? Probably because I had a daydream on my way home from work one day that my husband and I were singing this song to each other. I’m kinda embarrassed I just admitted that.
- Generator ^ 2nd Floor by Freelance Whales
So what do you think? Agree or disagree? Are there any glaring omissions?

not a bad liszt. lisztomania is a really good song. i’ve long told people that it’s one of my favs of the year. phoenix is obsessive and you can hear it.
for me, i’m going to have to break the year down by season, because this is the first year in a while where certain songs only made sense during that season (e.g. swim [to reach the end] by surfer blood–a beautiful and powerfully simple summer song, that i haven’t touched since the season has ‘fallen’).
Killer list… I personally would substitute “Lasso” for “Lisztomania”, but both songs are great… actually the whole album is great. Likewise, “The Train Song” is fantastic but I personally have to pick “Brackett, WI” by Bon Iver as my top “Dark Was the Night” track. Bat for Lashes is a phenomenal choice… and I don’t really care which track.
other top tens:
“So Insane” by Discovery
“Little Secrets” by Passion Pit
“Young Hearts Spark Fire” by Japandroids
“Two Doves” by Dirty Projectors
“Make Believe” Jeremy Enigk
Love the Jeremy Enigk shout out. I was going to include a song off Diary since the remastered version was released this year, but I thought that would kinda be cheating. Did you see that Solange (Beyonce’s sis) covered Stillness Is The Move? http://stereogum.com/archives/mp3/solange_covers_dirty_projectors_100771.html
If I find a song I like, I totally play it to death. I’m with you on that.
Most recently I’m in the process of slowly killing ‘The Man’s Machine’ By Jamie T – I swear I’ve listened to it 200 times. Previous deaths this year include ‘Keep Yourself Warm’ by Frightened Rabbit and ‘Great Expectations’ by The Gaslight Anthem, although I fear these were released last year and my music radar is on a 12-month jetlag.
I soundly agree with much of the list!
Yes yes yes! Kings & Queens. Good call. Since I have a penchant for the first song off an album, I really love 368, and I think Hocus Pocus would be the most perfect song for a car chase scene in a movie. I think FR’s Old Old Fashioned and Good Arms vs. Bad Arms are brilliant. Great suggestions! Thanks for the comment!
