I've always rather enjoyed Pitch Black, the original "Riddick" movie with Vin Diesel. It has very little in common with the sequels--thus, it's entirely enjoyable. If you translated film noir's murky, barely suppressed tension and shady, morally-compromised characters to sci-fi, you would get Pitch Black. So there you go.
